Who? Mike Cheaney

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — At tonight's practice in Evansville's Carson Center (the new favorite venue for a certain Sugar Bears assistant), the Sugar Bears and onlookers were treated to a special guest appearance from former Bears assistant Mike Cheaney, who worked under Rand Chappell during Chappell's first two years at UCA. For those wondering what Mike's been up to, he's living in his hometown of Evansville, and has taken some time off from coaching to run some youth programs, rec centers, parks, and "all kinds of [crap]", according to his buddy.

Upon some browsing of the Carson Center, some of the University of Evansville's most notable alums are basketball coaching legend Jerry Sloan (see the picture over on Kai's blog), and Randy Mattingly — brother of New York Yankees great Donnie Baseball.

Although not terriby notable, there is a UE Sports HOFer whose last name is Cook-Burger and another named Unfried. No word on whether the two are related.

And So. Miss just took its final knee, wrapping up a 31-19 win over Arkansas State in the New Orleans/Lafayette Bowl. It's weird watching ASU on television in Indiana. That's just not something you get every day. It's also weird watching anything on a 19" television tossed into a 32" TV hole. Other than that, you can't gripe a bit about the $35 per night for the HomeLife Studios & Suites in tropical Evansville.

You can gripe, however, if you are the bus driver. This cat used to coach some basketball back in the day, and he can find fault in anything in a hurry. He's not a fan of modern offenses, not a fan of having your bigs more than a couple feet from the basket, not a fan of stats, and not a fan of college coaches who did not play college ball.

He once had a team lose a state semifinal game because Marianna's gym had those pesky glass backboards, causing his team to miss 14 layups in the final quarter since they were used to wood and metal boards.

He didn't mention it, but I bet he doesn't like the long shorts, either.
