Tales from the Carson Center

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A long practice session just winded down at the Carson Center across town and now it's time to wind down the day and get some sleep.

Riding a bus for the better part of a day will wear you down. But it doesn't wear down the bus drivers story-telling ability. (See Josh's blog for details on that.)

But anways, as you may have already read in Josh's blog, we did do some exploring of the Carson Center and we did find basketball coaching legend Jerry Sloan. As a life-long Bulls fan, I'd be remiss if I didn't remind everyone that Sloan was also a stand out with the Bulls and has his number (4) hanging alongside Michael Jordan's and UCA alum Scottie Pippen's in the rafters at the United Center in Chicago.

Another interesting thing about the Carson Center was the naming of the gymnasiums in the building. The Sugar Bears practiced in the "Large Gymnasium" and there was a "Small Gymnasium" down the hall. Much to the chagrin of Josh and I the small gymnasium was locked. Which meant we couldn't take a look inside or find a stray basketball to shoot around.

But my assumption on the small gym is that it contained just one court, while the large gym contained several various courts. There's nothing like great multi-purpose facilities that have 324 courts painted on one. Go lines.

On a positive note, Josh and I did get a little workout in. There was an eliptical trainer and stationary bike off to the side with no one using them, so between stories from the bus driver we went and got our cardio done for the day.

And to make this entry even more random, here's another factoid about the building. The men's basketball office is located right behind a trophy case. The door is labeled "Evansville Basketball". The women's basketball office is located near the end of the hall with the door labeled "Evansville Women's Basketball".

So the men's basketball team is simpy just "basketball" but the women's team has to be labeled "women's".

Alright, enough of that.

The only other tremendous highlight was the apperance by former UCA men's assistant coach Mike Cheany. (Again see Josh's blog for the complete story there.)

Well it's about time to shut this thing down and see what it's like to sleep in Indiana.
