The Schwab

I'm just sitting here watching some old Stump the Schawb on ESPN Classic. I really can't stand the show, but sports trivia intrigues me, so I get sucked in.

The main thing that bugs me, aside from Stu Scott hosting, is the Schwab himself. What a loser this guy is, and he's not trying to hide it. There's nothing wrong with knowing some sports trivia, but when you act like you're the greatest person in the world because you know some trivia it gets a little annoying.

It's not like he's extremely hip or anything either. He trots out to his seat with sports jerseys on, which works for some people, but not a middle-aged man with a beer gut. (At an actual game, this wouldn't be such an atrocity, but a crappy game show is no sporting event.)

I think another thing that keeps me watching is someone actually knocking off the Schwab. He acts as if it's the end of the world when he gets a question wrong or loses. It's great. It's not just one of those times when he's way to in to it and you feel bad for laughing. He just gets way to dramatic about it and acts as though it's the end of his life – so it's extremely comical. You really don't feel bad for the guy, because you know he's going back to his job as resident guy-everyone-hates in the ESPN research department.

Oh, and here's one more thing – why is it Stump the Schwab? The contestants don't ask the Schwab questions. Stu is the only one stumping anybody. A more suitable title would be something like: Sad Fat Man Answers Trivia Questions.

Bring back the Two Minute Drill. Now that's a great show. Regular sports trivia guys, getting questions from a panel of athletes and sports personalities. It's simple and it was hosted by the dry and witty Kenny Mayne (who needs to be on ESPN a lot more). Thank God it's reappeared on Classic.
