Bryan Moats (the Times do-it-all guy: illustrator, designer, web figure-outer) designed logos and accompanying art for the Times’ first Craft Beer Festival. The plan was to somehow incorporate this onto the cover.
Part of the art Bryan whipped up for all the promotional items were illustrated beer bottles featuring the beer-label logo. The initial thought was to incorporate these illustrated bottles into the cover with real people somehow. Sort of a Roger Rabbit-type thing. Obviously fake bottles that would look right at home with real people.
Ambitious, yes. And it just wasn’t working.
Plan B. Find some guys with some beer bottles, change the labels to ours. Bingo.
After a little Photoshop work, you have the cover. Which came together a lot faster than my failed attempts and Plan A.
Live and learn, and then do it again.
